Welcome Back to the Spring Term

Dear Parents,

The Spring Term consists of only ten weeks and I am delighted that the students and staff appear to have made such a positive and productive start.

The School continues to work towards achieving the aims communicated in our School Development Plan and I have been delighted with the progress made in all areas, including our negotiations with the Northampton Borough Council and the Churches Conservation Trust. I know that Cognita are looking to support us in our ambitious plans and we hope to have exciting news of progress and developments in the near future.

Teaching and Learning remains our primary focus and I am delighted that Miss Georgina Pearson, Head of English, has been promoted to the Senior Leadership Team as Teaching and Learning Manager. Mrs Kate Hyde, Head of Maths, has also joined the Senior Leadership Team as our Data and Assessments Manager. The staff INSET session prior to the arrival of the children focused on two key areas that our Teaching and Learning Working Group has identified can have a significant positive impact across the school; the quality of feedback and the need to promote a Growth Mindset for all children and staff. We will continue to work to develop these important aspects of our work, including taking the opportunity to involve parents in working in partnership with the school.

Last week in the Senior School we welcomed Mr Stewart Richardson to replace Mr Roe in the Senior School. Mr Richardson is an experienced teacher and examiner and will teach Humanities until we are joined by Mrs Marialena Wellings in May. We are also pleased to have secured the ongoing services of Miss Reena Madhavji teaching IT until Easter. Mr Brough has now been appointed as Head of IT and will commence his teaching in this department at Easter, whilst retaining his science lessons with examination groups. Mr Jonathan Tedd will join the school to teach Science at Easter.

In the Junior School we welcomed Miss Katie Hughes as an addition to our Nursery Team. I am delighted to report that Mrs Lucy Hunter and her husband welcomed Ottilie Beaux into the world during the holidays and we offer our best wishes and congratulations.

Parents should have received a letter via parentmail at the start of term of an issue involving fraudulent activity involving school fees. Please do note that Cognita have not changed bank account details, have no plans to do so and would only ever communicate such a change to you formally – not in an email at the point of invoicing for payment.

The school continues to look to re-structure and the ‘Introduction to Sixth Form College Evening’ was extremely well attended by parents and students wishing to discover more of the opportunities available for the next stage of education after Quinton from the eleven schools and colleges attending. Mr Brough’s appointment will see the school working to develop our Virtual Learning Environment, Firefly, in addition to the Digital Leaders Programme which will include students leading sessions for teachers and parents on coding and the use of technology. Use of Social Media remains an issue for all schools and all students will receive expert guidance in PSHEE lessons with the opportunity for parents to also partake in a practical based session in our ‘Parents Guide to Social Media’ which will involve students telling us exactly what we need to know and understand about what our children are doing online. As we look to embrace new technologies, Miss Pearson has introduced our first department Twitter page. This will be a place where we can all share anything interesting in the world of English and performing arts.  We will post national and in-school competitions; interesting articles about literature; secret challenges; exciting shows you could go and see and anything intriguing in the world of literature, language and drama. If you have a Twitter account please follow @QHSEnglish and if your child has one then please encourage them to do the same. Obviously we expect the highest levels of on-line etiquette at all times, the account will be closely monitored to ensure it remains positive, supportive and hopefully inspirational!

In curriculum planning, Mrs Goody, the Deputy Head, is working to include Spanish in the curriculum for the Junior School in September and to provide Year 9 students with an opportunity to experience Business Studies and Psychology prior to their GCSE options. Staff are now working to provide study support interventions for examination year groups and we have introduced a staff mentor programme using senior teachers for those that we feel will benefit.

Mr Capuano, as Head of Junior School, is now working closely with our excellent Early Years staff team to ensure that our pre-school provision is enhanced next year as we move to becoming a 3-16 years school with a pre-school provision for 49 weeks out of the calendar year.

The support of Quinton parents has been greatly appreciated by all staff. Mrs Trish Davies is taking a lead role in developing link activities with parents, former pupils and the local community. We do hope that you will wish to support the activities of the school as we work to develop our all-round provision.

There are many exciting events this term and all pupils have received a copy of the School Calendar. I am personally looking forward to accompanying our Q5 and Q6 Choir to the ‘Young Voices Concert’ at the O2 Arena; watching our Senior School Netballers in action in the National Finals; and visiting the Houses or Parliament and Cabinet War Rooms with our Senior School debaters.

Our School Council have been effective in having the multi-use games area opened up for lunchtime activities and the introduction of a school ‘Excursion Day’ in the Summer Term.

We will be having a marquee on the school lawn at the end of the school year and would like to make parents aware of the following key diary dates in this week:

Saturday 30th June – Senior School Prom (Q11-Q13)

Monday 2nd July – Nursery Luncheon and Graduation Ceremony

Tuesday 3rd July – Junior School Prize Giving at 2pm

Wednesday 4th July – Sports Presentation Evening

Thursday 5th July – Senior School Prize Giving at 2pm

This will be a whole school event celebrating the achievements and efforts of all children in all areas of Senior School life throughout the year, in addition to the awarding of the prizes.

Thursday 5th July – Junior School (Q6) Graduation Party

Saturday 7th July – Quinton House Parents’ Ball in the Marquee

Note that the Term Dates for the Academic Year 2018-19 are now posted on the school website.

This Saturday we have a large number of internal and external candidates seeking scholarships for Senior School entry. We offer them our very best wishes as they look to move into our Senior School at what we feel is a very exciting time for the school.

Regards,

Tim Hoyle
